The psychology of cats is a very interesting and dynamic study, but when it comes to understanding how to have a great relationship with your cat, there is really only one thing to know. When your cat's happy, you reap the happiness too.
A cat lives to please him- or her self before reaching out to please you. It makes perfect sense. I like to refer to it as cat-sense. Once your cat feels good, he or she can spread the goodwill without even trying.
Actually, cat happiness is contagious.
You've probably noticed that your cat's senses are especially keen. But your cat doesn't need to depend upon senses such as sound and smell to know what's happening. It's what your cat feels instinctively, moment to moment.
A cat is affected by fluctuations in energy and responds to such changes emotionally, rather than trying to intellectualize the feelings away. The cat's sense of feeling is highly and finely developed.
Invariably, your cat is drawn to positive energy. You've probably noticed that when you're all stretched out on the couch with happy thoughts, your cat will suddenly surface and hop up on your chest. Such a sponge for happy positive energy!
When it comes to negative or anxious energy, your cat may resort to fight or flight. If your computer becomes uncooperative and you're yelling at it to shape up, your cat may appear and yowl at you to calm down. This is your cat's attempt to convince you to stop because your anxiety is a disturbance to him or her. Conversely, your cat may scoot off at your first outcry.
Hopefully most of your friends are cat-lovers, but there may be a few that are cat-phobic or indifferent. Sometimes your cat is drawn to the latter and will head-bump against their legs or jump onto their lap to knead away the discontent. At other times, your cat will simply ignore the "unenlightened" friends and hang near those in the know.
Although a cat is so much a creature of habit and happiness, it's not out of the question for your cat to choose to reinvent him, or herself from time to time as well. Perhaps that's why we are so in awe of the wonders of our cat.
